The Project

A Traditional Sauna Designed for a Corolla Home

This custom home sauna was built on the third floor of a residence in the Currituck Club in Corolla, North Carolina.

Harvest designed the room around the home’s available space and the homeowner’s desire for a traditional sauna experience. Western Red Cedar creates the warm interior, multi-level benches provide seating at different heat levels and a double-insulated window brings natural light and an exterior view into the room.

Harvest plans custom home saunas around each residence, coordinating room dimensions, seating, glazing, interior materials and appropriately sized heating equipment.

Design Detail

Natural Light and an Outer Banks View

A sauna window can do more than brighten the room. In this project, the exterior window became part of the experience by connecting the warm cedar interior to the coastal setting outside.

The double-insulated construction separates the heated sauna interior from the outdoors while allowing natural light to enter. Cedar boards frame the glass, and the clean horizontal lines of the benches keep attention on the view.

Materials & Heat

Western Red Cedar and a 12 kW Harvia Heater

Western Red Cedar gives the room its rich, warm appearance and establishes the traditional character of the sauna. Multi-level bench seating allows bathers to choose their preferred position within the naturally layered heat.

A 12 kW Harvia OY heater, manufactured in Finland, supplies the heat for the completed room. Heater selection is coordinated with the sauna’s dimensions, surfaces, glazing and configuration so the system is appropriate for the space.
