5,000-Bottle Traditional Custom Wine Cellar in McLean, Virginia
Custom Sapele mahogany racking, a substantial central island and varied display styles turn this basement into a tailored home for an extensive wine collection.

The Project
A Traditional Wine Room Designed Around a Large Collection
This residential custom wine cellar in McLean, Virginia was designed to store approximately 5,000 bottles while creating a traditional, furniture-quality wine room using custom Sapele mahogany racking.
Located in the basement of the home, the finished cellar combines several wine display and storage configurations instead of relying on a single repetitive racking style. The result balances substantial capacity with a room that feels deliberately designed from every viewing angle.
This project provides a close look at the craftsmanship behind Harvest’s
custom wine cellars in McLean and Northern Virginia.

Design Detail
Custom Sapele Mahogany Wine Racking
The cellar’s custom Sapele mahogany racking was planned around the homeowner’s collection and the large bottle capacity required for the room.
Individual bottle storage, horizontal label-forward presentation and waterfall wine displays create visual variety throughout the perimeter. These configurations make selected bottles easier to see while retaining the organized storage needed for an approximately 5,000-bottle collection.

Project Feature
A Large Central Wine Cellar Island
One of the defining elements is the long Sapele mahogany island running through the center of the room. Instead of leaving the middle of the cellar as unused circulation space, the island contributes meaningful bottle storage and gives the room a more architectural, fully built-in appearance.
Custom displays at the ends of the island echo the waterfall configurations used around the room, helping the central feature feel integrated with the perimeter racking.

Planning & Performance
Climate Control for a Large Residential Collection
A wine cellar of this size requires dependable temperature control. Harvest specified a Wine Guardian DS088 split wine cellar cooling system to support long-term wine storage.
Using a split system allows the cellar’s climate-control equipment to support the room without dominating the appearance of the finished traditional design.
